Globalization of Diseaes

CARLOS LOBO-DANIEL GONZALEZ, English IV
Modern means of transport enable people to travel around the world; therefore diseases passed from one side to another faster and easier also, examples of this are AIDS/HIV, The West Nile Virus, and H1N1 that have spread throughout the world. According to the World Health Organization: “As of 2004, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, and an estimated 39.5 million people worldwide are living with HIV West Nile Virus” (Globalization and Diseases, June 2010); The West Nile Virus consists in a flavivirus commonly found in Africa, West Asia, and the middle East (Health topics A-2, 2010), in USA, over 15,000 people have tested positive for WNV infection (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), but away this virus can infect humans, birds, mosquitoes, horses, and some other mammals, Finally in Costa Rica the swine flu, or H1N1 has reached 60 people and number of suspects continues to rise, says Dr. Maria Luisa Avila, Minister of public health. The quick and easy transmission of diseases is one of the negative points that we see in the world globalization, Therefore, the hygiene in every home and every person should be strengthened to not become infected and to be free from diseases, we must to know and apply health protocols established by the ministries in charge of take care our health.

  1. I believe globalization has a lot of pros but one negative effect is without a doubt the spread of disease from one country to another, it is just a plane of distance, and quickly you can carry a disease that is not common in your country with all the negative effects such as: easy spreading of unknown diseases into a country with health personal not prepared for the detection and treatment of it or they don´t have medicines to fight them. A solution that partially solves this problem is the vaccines they ask if you are going to visit countries in order to protect yourself and others, one example is the yellow fever vaccine, it is a small step for a huge problem.
